Spy on your competitors to get ahead

You can get ahead in business by being a total gentleman, and letting people get ahead themselves, hoping they will scratch your back somewhere in the future. Sometimes life doesn’t work out as planned, however, and sometimes you need to just be plain old ruthless or cunning. He who dares, wins.

If you build websites for a living, you know that the most important thing is the keyword you use to get up the rankings of Google and the other top search engines like Yahoo or Bing. That keyword is the make or break of your website – so it has to be well researched. This could of course take days. Unless you employ a costly keyword researcher of course.

There is another way, that is becoming more popular in recent times, after a quick tip on a blog by a well known marketer. This tip has been expanded upon below. Basically it relies on the principle of – “whatever your competition is doing – do it better”.

So, let us imagine you wanted to start a blog tonight. You would firstly need a main niche, then would have to whittle it down to the best keyword under said niche – and then you would need to check that the competition was not too heavy on that keyword… BUT – there’s a quicker way. http://www.nsspy.org/ is a website that allows you to see the most recent registrations on various DNS nameservers. This basically means that you can see what domain names people are registering today, yesterday or two months ago…

The best way to use this site, is to search for .org or .com type TLD’s that have a two or three word keyword, such as “salsadancelessons.com”. Something that is a good solid domain TLD like a .com, suggests that the buyer is willing to actually spend a little money, instead of just buying hundreds of .infos. Look at all those good domains, from around two months ago, and check if they have been developed. Then check the keywords these guys are using on their site are not heavy competition and have a good search volume. This should increase your niche hunting speed ten fold!
