SEO Website Promotion – Optimizing
SEO comes in many forms, and in recent years it has been necessary to make sure you have all the boxes ticked if you want to get good rankings. Google is looking closer and closer at pages, to ensure that the results they deliver are
more finely tuned to the actual keyword search. Any sites that miss out a few crucial steps are ranked lower than the sites that take the time to enhance the page’s search engine value. Everybody understands the importance of Pagerank and Trustrank, but many people do not know how to make sure they are covering all the bases. For one thing, Trustrank is a key factor now, and Google will lend more weight to a site that has outbound links, for example, than it ever used to. This shows Google that you are not just setting up a website with specific intentions of marketing a product – you are genuinely trying to give the reader information.
If you take the time to enhance your images for SEO, for example, you are going to reap the benefits with traffic. Google images get a lot of searches, and these searches mean traffic to your site. If Google sees your site getting this traffic (just look in your Google Analytics to see how much traffic comes from images), then they will apportion your ranking according to the volume you get for specific terms.
One theory circulated by internet marketers and web developers, is that Google is more likely to rank a page higher, if they see that link on their search engine getting a lot of clicks. Naturally this seems logical, and one is inclined to believe the theory has some element of truth. So, to further add weight to the Google Images theory, if you can generate traffic by optimizing your images, then you should also see some improvement on the normal organic searches.
Basic SEO in WordPress
WordPress is the most flexible content management system on the internet today. The best feature that WordPress has to offer is of course its SEO properties, and ease of use in this area. It used to be that only developers and programmers could put Meta tags and descriptions into a website’s pages, but nowadays, there are plugins and standard features which allow even the most novice webmaster create stunning looking websites with the basic of SEO
installed. SEO in WordPress is as simple as you want to make it, and can be as detailed and technical as you wish also. It is always recommended to get an SEO specialist to fully optimise your website, but you really can do the basics yourself.
It is recommended that you add tags to every one of your posts and pages, and this can be done by completing the Tags form field in the admin of the site itself. You will also need to ensure you are using your keywords in the title of the post or page, and maybe also check that the name of your site and description also contain your keyword or at the very least, a detailed description of your site’s content.
On the subject of content, it is always recommended that you use the proper hierarchy to a block of text. For example, the title of the post is a H1 tag, normally, and if you wish to use larger headers in the content, use the Header 2 (H2) tags which are available in the text formatting area of the post’s control panel.
These are just simple steps, but important nevertheless. Google relies heavily on certain make-up of a page, and if the overall optimisation is too spammy, incorrectly spelled, or formatted without care – the search engine may rank you lower than a page that adheres to all of the above.
Finding a niche…
Finding a niche, and niche keywords, does not have to be taxing if you know the shortcuts. When you sit back and think of all the interests in your life, or hobbies, or just the day to day activities you perform – you are able to think of at least one thing to search for on Google. We make that our starting block. The only difference is, instead of using Google search engine, we use the tools that Google provides especially for finding these keywords and niches.
Firstly, go to Google.com and search for a very broad example of a niche like “golf”.
Right now you should have some local results (maybe a golf course or some golf stores near you) and then the sponsored results for improving your swing etc. Then below that are your organic results (which will of course contain Youtube videos from time to time), and further down you will notice the real information we need on this page – Searches related to golf.
These keywords and keyphrases are what Google themselves consider to be LSI keywords. So what we do now is we take these keywords, and we put them into another Google tool which is fantastic fro finding niches – Google Insights. http://www.google.com/insights/search
By entering a related search term, we can delve into a niche and find further sub niches to explore. We can search by country, and more importantly time period. It is usually best to start with a very broad time period like the last 12 months. We are then able to narrow the search by category. It is best to stick with All Categories. Once you have searched, you will see lots of related search terms appearing further down the screen. Clicking these reveal more and more. You can see just how popular a search term is using the graphs.
Use these in conjunction with Google Adwords Keyword Tool, and you will find hundreds of keywords that would never normally appear in niche keyword tools etc.!
